Richard Bing, Djabugay Representative, talking about the Wangetti Trail’s first sections opening with hopes it will become a major tourist drawcard. The 7.8-kilometre dual mountain biking and hiking route winds through rainforest from Palm Cove Jetty to the Ellis Beach foreshore, north of Cairns. The trail follows ancient paths, used by Indigenous groups for trade and cultural travel for tens of thousands of years. Construction began in mid-2023, a year after it was initially scheduled to open to the public and five years after it was first announced, as delays were due to the COVID-19 pandemic and record-breaking flooding from Tropical Cyclone Jasper. The full 94-kilometre trail is expected to open in 2026 after significant delays to the project. Traditional Owners agree this would allow for more storytelling.

Sarah Donnelley, Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) Director of Projects, talking about Actors help Officeworks write better literacy journey for Indigenous kids. Leading office and education supplier Officeworks has for the past 13 years partnered the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation for its annual, nationwide Literacy is Freedom Appeal, which assists marginalised communities gain vital language, literacy and communications skills. The long-standing partnership has empowered communities and improved literacy and educational skills among Australian children, so far raising $4.2 million to help further educate more than 35,000 students. 2024 ALNF ambassadors – award winning actress Michala Banas and actor and Play School presenter Luke Carroll – have been supporting this year’s campaign, sharing a passion for education. The Appeal, which closes September 30, is part of Officeworks’ People and Planet Positive Plan, a commitment to raise $5m for local causes between 2020 and 2025 and supporting 30,000 students who need it most. Alice Doyle, Charles Darwin Universities (CDU) Associate Vice-Chancellor East Arnhem Region, talking about CDU opening a permanent campus to deliver tertiary education in East Arnhem Region. In a special ceremony in Nhulunbuy Northeast Arnhem Land Charles Darwin University (CDU) received the official title and meaning of the newest regional campus Mathaman | CDU Nhulunbuy Campus. The building was officially opened in partnership with the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation (RAC) Board who represent the Rirratjingu people whose land on which the Mathaman CDU Nhulunbuy Campus is on and was blessed by Rirratingu Traditional Owners. “Mathaman means to speak with lightning.” RAC Chairman and Rirratjingu Traditional Owner Wanyubi Marika said. Since CDUs presence TAFE training student numbers have doubled.
