James Bednall, Charles Darwin University Lecturer (Linguistics), talking about Delegates from more than 20 countries descended on Darwin to celebrate multilingualism. Charles Darwin University welcomed more than 130 delegates from 23 countries last week for the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia – ALAA Conference. The ALAA Conference brought together applied linguists, language teachers, curriculum specialists, and First Nations education practitioners from across the globe to share knowledge about innovations in language learning and teaching, transformative pedagogy, language policy and planning, and the role of artificial intelligence and other disruptive technologies in applied linguistics. Aunty Kathy, Wesley Mission Reconciliation Action Lead, talking about Aunty Kathy takes top honour – changing outcomes for Aboriginal children in NSW. Wesley Mission’s Aunty Kathy Donnelly has been named the 2025 Deadly Advocate of the Year, one of NSW’s most significant recognitions for leadership in advancing the rights and wellbeing of Aboriginal children, young people and families. Presented by @absec, Aunty Kathy was selected for her powerful role in reshaping how Wesley Mission supports Aboriginal children and families, ensuring cultural respect, trauma awareness and lived experience are embedded across services statewide. As Reconciliation Action Lead at Wesley Mission, Aunty Kathy has led reforms that have strengthened cultural safety and improved outcomes for Aboriginal families. Congratulations, Aunty Kathy! Dr. Liza Robertson, @wuchopperen Senior GP and RACGP Award Recipient, talking about ‘Truly inspiring’: RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander award winners announced. Winners of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Awards have been announced at the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) annual conference in Brisbane. The Aunty Val Dahlstrom Award for Aboriginal Health Excellence goes to Dr Liza Robertson. As a senior GP at Wuchopperen Health Service in Far North Queensland, Dr Robertson has cultivated strong relationships with the local community. She’s a reliable and sought-after GP in situations that involve complex trauma, emergency presentations and palliative care for adults and children. Dr Robertson is such a dedicated leader. She’s committed to supervising medical students, registrars and fellow GPs, ensuring her significant skills and experience are shared widely to enhance the clinical care the entire community receives.
