NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 16/09/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Dr. Shellie Morris, Musician, talking about her forthcoming landmark children’s album, ‘Singing For Our Little Ones’. It’s a really beautiful album centred around reviving and celebrating Warumungu language, which UNESCO now lists as an endangered language, while also providing a joyful resource for early learning. Led by the first single, ‘The Environment Around Me’, Dr. Morris will be launching the project with an exclusive performance as part of Darwin Festival’s 2025 program. ‘The Environment Around Me’ honours the Warumungu landscape and the ongoing responsibility and connection to Country in teaching, nurturing, feeding and carrying community. Performed by Dr Shellie Morris and Miriam Frank, this special first offering from ‘Singing For Our Little Ones’ encourages people to connect with nature, build vocabulary, and begin their journey into First Languages through music. The album is due for release on the 19th of September. You can find out more via the link below! (Photo Credits: 8CCC)

Maggie Miles, Director and Producer, talking about Journey Home. Journey Home tells the story of eminent Yolŋu actor David Gulpilil and his funeral in his traditional homelands. As he was passing of lung cancer, legendary Yolŋu actor David Gulpilil set in motion the process of sharing a part of himself the world had never seen. The film Journey Home, David Gulpilil fulfils that ambition, documenting the eminent actor’s traditional funeral in Gupulul in 2022. After Gulpilil died in South Australia in November 2021, director and producer Maggie Miles worked with Yolŋu leader Witiyana Marika to document the late actor’s lengthy funerary rites. It screened at Darwin’s Deckchair Cinema on Thursday night, opening the Darwin International Film Festival ahead of its wider cinematic release next month. You can find out more via the link below!
