Benson Saulo, The Torch Chair of the Board, talking about The Torch Program. They provide art, cultural and arts industry support to First Nations people currently in, or recently released, from Victorian prisons. Their aim is to reduce the rate of reoffending by encouraging the exploration of identity and culture through art. The program also allows participants to be involved in Exhibitions, through partnerships with Victorian museums, and express themselves and their stories of incarceration through art. Currently they have “Blak In-Justice: Incarceration and Resilience” at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, that calls attention to the pressing issue of Indigenous incarceration in Australia. And “We Sit in Circle” at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, from The First Nations women artists in We Sit in Circle who have lived experience of incarceration.
