NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 14/07/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Aunty Rhonda Collard-Spratt, Proud Yamatji-Noongar Elder, Stolen Generations survivor, author and vibrant storyteller, talking about the release of her final book in beloved children’s series. Brave Young Eagle is a powerful autobiographical tale of healing, family, and cultural pride. It marks the fourth and final chapter in Aunty Rhonda’s Spirit of the Dreaming series — a collection that has helped children across the country connect with Aboriginal culture, language, and lore through accessible and heart-led storytelling. Set on Yamatji Country, this story follows Walgathu, a wedge-tailed eagle chick who loses his courage and sense of belonging — mirroring Aunty Rhonda’s own journey as a child taken from her family during the Stolen Generations. Through breathtaking artwork, ancient Ingarda language, and the teachings of lore, the book offers children a path to understanding identity, resilience and connection to Country. Aunty Rhonda, also known as Aunty Curlew, is not only a respected Elder and author but also a poet, performer, and passionate advocate for truth-telling and intergenerational healing. Her long-time collaborator, Brisbane writer Jacki Ferro (Dragonfly Girl), co-authors the series. For every copy of Brave Young Eagle sold, Boolarong Press will donate to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, supporting language and literacy in remote communities.
